PREVALENCE, IMPACT AND MANAGEMENT OF PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME AMONG NURSING STUDENTS OF QUETTA

OBJECTIVES : The study aimed to assess the prevalence, impact and management of premenstrual syndrome among nursing students of Quetta METHODS : A cross sectional study was conducted in six different nursing schools of Quetta through a self-structured and self-administered questionnaire from March to September 2017. Questionnaire was composed of five domains.1st Domain was about demographics. 2nd Domain was asked about the menstrual history of participants. 3rd Domain was used to estimate about the prevalence of premenstrual syndrome. 4th Domain: Used to determine the impact of PMS on daily activities. 5th Domain: Used to estimate the management of PMS. A sample of 358 participants was collected by using non- probability convenient sampling technique. Data was analyzed through SPSS. RESULTS : Among the study participants majority (n=208, 58.1%) belongs to the age group of 16-20 years being unmarried (n=323, 90.2%) with Baloch ethnicity (n=142, 39.7%). Majority have regular (n=284, 79.3%) and normal periods (n= 203, 56.7%) while most commonly reported symptom was backache (n=303, 84.6%) and majority use tea (n=233, 65.1%) to remove their symptoms. Prevalence of PMS found to be (n=95, 26.5%) in study participants although their current health status was good (n=207, 57.8%) but their daily activities were affected because of the pain (n=27, 72.9%). CONCLUSIONS : The present study concluded that prevalence of PMS found to be low in nursing students of Quetta city and respondents with irregular periods were more suspected to be diagnose with PMS.
