MEDICATION ADHERENCE AMONG DIABETIC PATIENT IN THE COMMUNITY AN OBSERVATIONAL PROSPECTIVE PILOT STUDY

OBJECTIVES: To study prevalence and medication adherence among diabetes patients in the community. METHODS: Protocol, ICF and CRF approval from ethics Committee. A pilot observational and prospective study was to study prevalence and medication adherence among diabetes patients in the community in Sector 7, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. Data collection of demography, medical history, current medication of anti-diabetic only. Data collection was done in standard questionnaires, after baseline deta collection standard counseling as importance and care related to prescribed medicine, information about diabetes, help of exercise, diet and regular taking of medicine and regular check up etc information and awareness was given with two follow ups. Analysis of change in Adherence, medication knowledge and disease knowledge scores from baseline and during follow up collected data were done. RESULTS: The prevalence of diabetes patients in sector 7 was found 2.05%. Medication adherence shows 41.35%, medication knowledge 55.77% and disease knowledge was 76.25%. After patient counseling it showed improvement in Adherence, medication knowledge and disease knowledge. CONCLUSIONS : Present study concluded that medication and diseases knowledge was improved by counselling and education. Pharmacist plays an important member of health care.
