IMPACT OF PHARMACEUTICAL CARE ACTIVITIES ON TYPE 1 DIABETIC PATIENTS "OBSERVATIONAL RANDOMIZED SELF-CONTROL STUDY"

OBJECTIVES : Diabetes mellitus is a combination of heterogeneous disorders commonly presenting with episodes of hyperglycemic and glucose intolerance. Therefore proper education and pharmaceutical care plan is needed to help diabetic patients in managing their glucose level and further complications. Aim: Apply pharmaceutical care plan for type 1 diabetes to avoid complications and empower patients to manage their own condition successfully. METHODS : Observational, randomized self- control study which took place at Ainshams university hospitals, male and female children from 1.5-17 years old with type 1 diabetes were included and received pharmaceutical care and education. Problems areas in diabetes scale “PAID” questionnaire was used to evaluate the impact for the care plan. The study was divided into baseline and final interview with difference of 1 month for 3 months follow up. RESULTS : One hundred patients, 52% females, 48% males, 55% having family history of diabetes. Score of PAID ranged from mean 68.75 to 26.25 at baseline, while after education it ranged from 55 to 13.75. There was statistical significant difference between baseline and after education by using paired t-test, p value of ≤ 0.001 was observed. CONCLUSIONS : Application of education session significantly empowered diabetic patients to manage their own condition successfully.
