OBJECTIVES : The objective of the study was to determine the HRQoL of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) patients.

METHODS : A Cross-sectional, Questionnaire based study was conducted from March to September, 2017 in different hospitals of Quetta city, Pakistan. The European Quality of Life (EQ5D) Questionnaire consist of five domains i.e. mobility, self care, usual activities, pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression along with a Visual Analog Scale (VAS). The data was analyzed by using SPSS 22.0 version. Continuous variables were presented as Mean and Standard deviations while the Categorical variables were presented as Frequency and Percentage. The Demographic Characteristics were compared in EQ5D scores by the use of Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis test (P<0.05).

RESULTS : One hundred and thirty seven participants were included in the study. The average EQ5D and EQ-VAS score reported in the current study was 0.30±0.2 and 51.68±12.0, respectively. The demographic and clinical characteristics that were significantly associated with HRQoL were locality, educational status, employment status, income, gestation week, family history of diabetes, previous history of GDM, presence of any other disease, treatment and diagnosis of GDM.

CONCLUSIONS : The GDM had negative impact on mother’s HRQoL. Providing knowledge about the disease on antenatal visits, in time diagnosis and diagnosis of GDM by standard methods given by American Diabetes Association (ADA) and WHO can contribute to improve the HRQoL.
