APPRAISAL OF AETIOLOGY, LIFESTYLES AND PRESCRIBING PATTERN IN RENAL FAILURE PATIENTS –A PROSPECTIVE STUDY

OBJECTIVES : The main objective of the study was to evaluate the causes, prescribing pattern, lifestyle of kidney failure patients.

METHODS : A prospective, observational study was carried out in nephrology department of private super speciality hospital over 6 months period from January 2017 to june 2017. Demographic details, necessary clinical data, and medication details were collected in a specially designed proforma. Data collected was analysed by using SPSS software and results were reported.

RESULTS : Out of 100 patients the prevalence of renal failure is high in age group of 41-60 (45%) followed by 20-40 (41%), 61-80 (14%). According to the study, renal failure is more prevalent in males (66%) when compared to females (34%). As per to the study results, various causes of renal failure among the patients are observed as drug-induced in 22 patients (22%), Hypertension in 19 patients (19%). Most of the patients (52%) were prescribed with 6-10 drugs. Most of the renal failure patients were prescribed with Anti-hypertensives, vitamins, proton pump inhibitors, antibiotics. Salt restricted diet is advised for all renal failure patients.

CONCLUSIONS : The age group 41-60 are more effected to CKD when compared to other age groups. And males are more prone to CKD when compared to females. The top most 3 cause of CKD are Drug-Induced, DM, HTN. A total 100 prescriptions were collected the average number of drugs per prescription are 6-10. Antihypertensive (calcium channel blockers + Beta-blockers + Diuretics), Proton pump inhibitors, Vitamins, Antibiotics are commonly prescribed drugs. The polypharmacy noted in the study found inevitable because of the multifactorial aetiologies involved and needful multi-interventional approach towards it.
