OBJECTIVES: Understanding and evaluating patient characteristics, concordance with post discharge care, health care resource utilization and repeated events among adults and children with an inpatient or Emergency Department (ED). METHODS: Truven Healthcare MarketScan® Commercial and Medicare Supplemental and COB Databases was used to examine the event characteristics and healthcare resource use (HCRU) related to the event and assess Epinephrine Auto-Injector (EAI) prescriptions impact on HCRU. RESULTS: The study comprised 11389 adults (age > CONCLUSIONS: High proportion of patients seen in the ED received significant lifesaving interventions with a significant proportion admitted into the hospital. Suboptimal maintenance of EAI prescriptions lead to costly interventions in a hospital setting. Current educational programs and safety information delivered to patients and caregivers regarding the use of EAIs to treat anaphylaxis may need improvement. This may help improve patient outcomes and reduce costs to the healthcare system.
