OBJECTIVES:  Today procedures on varicose veins could be performed with innovative endovascular approaches: radiofrequency ablation therapy and vein occlusion with cyanoacrylate. The objective of this study is to determine and compare the resource consumption associated to these procedures performed in outpatient setting of care. METHODS:  This activity-based cost-analysis was conducted in one Italian hospital with completed learning curve in endovascular procedures on varicose veins. Patient flow and resource utilization were mapped and segmented through interviews with medical staff. Unit costs were retrieved from hospital data for the following categories 1) staff time, 2) tests, 3) drugs/consumables 4) surgical outpatient room 5) materials/medical device and 6) general costs.
