OBJECTIVES: Long-term nationwide data on healthcare costs of patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) are not widely studied. The aim was to investigate long-term healthcare costs in incident patients diagnosed with PAD with and without a history of additional atherosclerotic disease. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study including all patients with a first hospitalisation with PAD diagnosis at discharge identified in the mandatory Swedish National Patient Register from 2006-2014. These data were linked to the Cause of Death Register. Total healthcare costs (hospitalizations and hospital outpatient visits), CV-related and limb-related costs are reported (2015 Euros [€]) as mean per-patient yearly costs and cumulative costs over a maximum follow-up of 6 yearspatients with incident PAD diagnosis only and incident PAD diagnosis with a history of coronary heart disease (CHD), ischemic stroke (IS), or both CHD and IS.
