HIGH DEMAND FOR POST-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS (PEP) FOR CONSENSUAL SEX EXPOSURE SUGGESTS A NEED FOR PRE-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS (PREP) IN UGANDA

OBJECTIVES: Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) currently is the only way to reduce the risk of HIV infection in individuals exposed to the virus. Currently there is limited data on PEP in Sub Saharan Africa. In Uganda PEP is generally offered for occupational exposure. We assessed the reason for seeking PEP at a large urban HIV Center in Kampala. METHODS: Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is located within the national referral hospital and provides treatment to 8,000 HIV patients and occupational PEP services to health care workers. We included data captured from January 2003 to August 2015 on all individuals seeking PEP. Data was entered using EPI- info. Descriptive frequency tables by nature of exposure were generated and proportions compared using fishers’ exact test. RESULTS:
