OBJECTIVES: Drug consumption in Slovakia belongs over a long period to the highest among OECD countries. Cardiovascular diseases (I05-I99) remain the main cause of death in Slovakia leading to 25 198 deaths in 2014. In our study, we have collected and analysed data on utilisation of cardiovascular drugs in Slovakia. METHODS: We analysed data on cardiovascular drugs distributed on the Slovak pharmaceutical market between 2000 and 2015. Drug utilisation was measured in volume (DIDs) as well as in sales (EUR). We compared the trends of utilisation in volume and sales from 2000 to 2013 and performed an international comparison to OECD average as well. Furthermore, we focused on the stratification of consumption between all ATC subgroups of cardiovascular drugs from 2000 to 2015. RESULTS: Between 2000 and 2013, the utilisation of cardiovascular drugs in Slovakia has increased by 134.3% in volume (391.9 DID), whereas only by 52.4% in sales (81.4 billion EUR). The volume growth was characterized by a very strong correlation coefficient (r=0.99) in contrast to a much lower correlation coefficient of the sales growth (r=0.55). During the assessed period from 2000-2015, drugs from ATC subgroup C09 reached the highest utilisation both in DID (147.72; 27.0%) and also in EUR (1.18 billion EUR; 30.4%), followed by drugs from C10 and C08 subgroups. The overall change of utilisation over the assessed period amounted 47.9 DID for C09, 73.7 DID for C10 and -9.5 DID for C08. CONCLUSIONS: Utilisation of cardiovascular drugs in Slovakia is steadily increasing; in terms of volume (DID) faster than in sales (EUR). This reflects the drug price policy of Slovak Republic, according to which the prices of drugs are referenced to the average of the lowest three within the EU. C01, C05 and C08 were the only groups with decreasing drug utilisation.
