ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE AND PERCEPTION REGARDING BREAST CANCER AMONG PATIENTS ATTENDING GYNECOLOGICAL DEPARTMENT OF TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL IN QUETTA PAKISTAN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and perception regarding breast cancer among patients attending gynecological department of tertiary care hospital in Quetta Pakistan. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in three government hospitals by using a self-administered questionnaire to investigate participant's knowledge about the risk factors and symptoms of breast cancer, their attitudes towards screening behaviors. A total of 307 questionnaires were distributed to the patients. Data was collected from the period of May-2015 to June-2015. Descriptive statistics have been done by using SPSS version 20. RESULTS: The knowledge level of respondents was adequate. Majority of participants (n= 95 (30.9%) having age at first pregnancy ranges between 21 - 24 years. Majority of participants (n= 247 (80.5%) having child ranges between 1-4. Majority of participants (n= 273 (88.9%) have negative family breast cancer history. The knowledge result showed that majority of respondents (n=168 (54.7%) have adequate knowledge regarding breast cancer. Perception was assessed and it is showed that respondents (n=201 (65.5%) have poor practice regarding breast cancer. CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that knowledge having breast cancer was adequate however negative influence of low knowledge on the practice of BSE was identified. It is therefore necessary that population need more information on breast cancer risk estimation.
