OBJECTIVES The objective was to estimate the economic burden of B-thalassemia and to compare the cost of alternative iron chelation strategies in patients with transfusion (TDT) and non-transfusion dependent thalassemias (NTDT) in Greece. METHODS A multicenter, non interventional, retrospective, observational, phase IV study was conducted in the 3 out of 8 thalassemia units in Attica.  Patients’ data and resource use, including medication and related consumables, blood transfusions, lab tests, diagnostic examinations and hospital visits were recorded from January 2009 to December 2011, and classified per diagnosis and iron chelation treatment strategies. Greek NHS perspective was considered. RESULTS
