BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is one of the leading cancers in women, with a prevalence of 105 cases per 100,000 in India as per 2022. Treatment guidelines suggest specific endocrine therapies based on patients menopausal status. Common treatment regimens include 5-Fluorouracil, Adriamycin, and Cyclophosphamide in combination with Paclitaxel while HER - positive patients receive Trastuzumab. There is lack of data on QoL and mental health improvements, despite the fact that current treatment approaches are thought to be effective.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of current management on QoL and mental health in breast cancer based on hormonal status in pre and postmenopausal patients

METHODS: A total of 146 new cases of physician diagnosed breast cancer patients were included in the study. The standard questionnaire (EORTC QLQ - BR23, HADS) was used to assess the QoL and psychosocial status in breast cancer patients before and after the treatment

RESULTS: Among the study population; 73%, 8%, and 19% patients were in the early, recurrent, and metastatic stages respectively with majority of patients being postmenopausal (60%). The mean QoL (EORTC QLQ - BR23) scores were 38.3 before and 33.7 after the therapy (p < 0.05); whereas observing HADS data, depression symptoms (abnormal: 15.07% vs 5.48%; p < 0.05) and anxiety (abnormal: 10.27% vs 6.7%; p < 0.05) were improved after treatment respectively

CONCLUSIONS: Therapeutic intervention not only benefit patients clinically; it also significantly improves quality of life and mental health status
