OBJECTIVES : To assess the clinical characteristics, comorbid conditions, treatment patterns, and healthcare resource utilization(HCRU) of patients with peanut allergy(PA).

METHODS : Adults(18+years), adolescents(12-17years) and children(0-11years) with ≥1 diagnostic code for PA (ICD-9:V15.01;ICD-10:Z91.010) from 01/01/2018-12/31/2018 were included in this retrospective analysis of medical and pharmacy claims data from the IBM Marketscan Commercial and Medicare Supplemental Claims database. Demographics, comorbid conditions, treatment patterns, and HCRU (outpatient visits, in-patient visits, emergency room(ER) visits) of adults, adolescents, and children were analyzed separately. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data.

RESULTS : 65,148 adults, 71,640 adolescents, and 212,892 children with PA were included in these analyses. The majority of adults with a PA were female (59.88%); however, the majority of adolescents (59.08%) and children (60.45%) were male. Among adults with PA, 3.13% also had egg allergy, 3.32% milk allergy, 9.01% seafood allergy, 26.87% other food allergy, 35.44% asthma, 6.67% atopic dermatitis, 40.73% allergic rhinitis, and 9.84% urticaria. Among adolescents, 6.21% had egg allergy, 4.20% milk allergy, 6.80% seafood allergy, 34.82% other food allergy, 42.01% asthma, 13.20% atopic dermatitis, 50.52% allergic rhinitis, and 6.35% urticaria. Among children, 16.54% had egg allergy, 8.75% milk allergy, 4.97% seafood allergy, 38.88% other food allergy, 33.08% asthma, 28.89% atopic dermatitis, 45.22% allergic rhinitis, and 12.06% urticaria. In 2018, 26.32% of adults, 26.00% of adolescents, and 31.33% of children with a PA had an anaphylactic reaction; however, only 3.67% of adults, 2.55% of adolescents, and 2.01% of children had a prescription for epinephrine. In addition, 27.39% of adults, 13.43% of adolescents, and 8.61% of children visited an ER due to their PA.

CONCLUSIONS : PA affects patients of all ages. Comorbid conditions such as asthma, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and urticaria are common among patients with PA. Additionally, over a third of PA patients have at least one other type of food allergy.
