RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LOCATION AT TIME OF INJURY AND DAYS OF WORK MISSED

OBJECTIVES: Occupational injuries that result in time away from work are a prominent public health concern that place an economic burden on the individual, their family members, the employer, and the healthcare industry. Return to work outcomes are often reported for occupational injuries. Limited research exists describing return-to-work outcomes for injuries beyond those that occur in the workplace. Sprains and strains are the most common type of injury across diverse locations and activities. The objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between location at time of sprain or strain injury and days of work missed. METHODS: A cross-sectional, secondary analysis of the 2015-2017 National Health Interview Survey was used to describe national estimates of sprain and strain injuries among employed adults by location at time of injury and days of work missed. Relationship between location at time of injury and days of work missed was evaluated using chi-square. RESULTS: The sample was 55% male, 80% White, with an average age of 42 years. 27% of those injured missed 1-5 days of work and 17% missed 6 or more days. The majority of sprains and strains occurred inside the home (19.7%), outside the home (16.9%), and at sport facilities (13.3%). There were significant differences in days of work missed across locations at time of injury (X2(24)=142,566, p<.001). CONCLUSIONS: Location at time of injury is important to consider when investigating the impact of sprain and strain injuries on employees, their families, and employers. The economic burden of sprains and strains may be greater than previously estimated by occupational injuries alone. Since the majority of sprains and strains occurred around the home, existing injury prevention efforts for athletic and industrial populations should expand to reach the general population.
