DRY EYE DISEASE HAS A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON HEALTH STATUS- NEI-VFQ-25 BASED UTILITY ASSESSMENT FROM AN ONLINE SURVEY IN THE US AND UK

OBJECTIVES: Dry eye disease (DED) is a chronic eye condition that can negatively impact health status. A comprehensive cross-sectional web-based survey was undertaken in the United States (US) and United Kingdom (UK) to assess the burden of DED and its impact on daily activities as well as quality of life. Here we present data regarding the impact of DED symptoms on health status as assessed by utility values among patients with or without DED. METHODS: Individuals (≥18 years) with or without (non-DED) self-reported DED in the US and UK were recruited to an online survey. All participants completed the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire-25 (NEI-VFQ-25) from which 6 items were used to calculate utility values (0–1, 0=death, 1=perfect health {Rentz AM, et al. JAMA Ophthalmol. 2014;132:310–318}). Respondents with DED also completed the eye dryness score (EDS), a visual analogue scale (0–100, 0=no discomfort, 100=maximal discomfort). Participants were stratified in groups defined by increasing DED severity: EDS<40 (Group-1), 40≤EDS<60 (Group-2), and EDS≥60 (Group-3). RESULTS: There were 1003 (US) and 1002 (UK) participants with DED, and 1006 (US) and 1003 (UK) non-DED participants. Non-DED participants had higher utility values (indicating better health status) than those with DED. Mean±SD (range) for DED versus non-DED were: US, 0.82±0.14 (0.35–0.97) versus 0.90±0.09 (0.38–0.97); UK, 0.83±0.14 (0.40–0.97) versus 0.90±0.08 (0.35–0.97). Utility values were generally lower for participants with severe EDS-scored DED symptoms versus those with comparatively less symptoms. Mean±SD utility values for the US were: Group-1, 0.84±0.13; Group-2, 0.82±0.13; Group-3, 0.78±0.15. Mean±SD utility values for UK were: Group-1, 0.86±0.12; Group-2, 0.80±0.14; Group-3, 0.79±0.15. CONCLUSIONS: This comprehensive study in the US and UK shows that having DED is related to poorer health status, and that higher symptom severity is associated with greater impact on health status.
