DEMAND CHARACTERIZATION OF CHRONIC REHABILITATION SERVICES IN CHILDREN OF A HEALTH INSURER IN COLOMBIA

OBJECTIVES

:
Child development begins from the conception and involves aspects from physical growth, neurological, behavioral, cognitive, social and affective maturation in the childhood. When developing alterations occur, several health conditions are generated that make this population require more healthcare and integral chronic rehabilitation services.

Characterize the demand for chronic integral rehabilitation services of the population affiliated with a health insurer in Colombia during the 2016-2017 period.

METHODS

:
Retrospective and descriptive study based on information from 1774 members under 18 years of age with confirmed diagnoses of: motor insufficiencies of cerebral origin (MICO), Cerebral Palsy, Specific Development Delay, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Behavioral Disorders and Intellectual Disability, in 16 cities. Frequencies were determined by service and diagnostic group and proportions were compared by Chi squared test.

RESULTS

:
The database analyzed reported 1774 members who required chronic integral rehabilitation services, 521 female (29%) and 1253 male (71%). General average age was 6.91 years (SD 4.23 years), without significant difference for males and females. Regarding to services demand, the highest number of attentions was the pediatric consultation with 5416 services (28%), followed by physical therapy with 18% and psychological attention with 14%. About diagnosis, the ASD logged the largest number of attentions 6850 (36%), being the age range of 5 to 14 years, the group with most services demand. According gender, in males were 3836 services (23%) for ASD, while in females the motor insufficiencies of cerebral origin registered 1098 (18%) services. As to location, Cartagena and Barranquilla were the cities that used the most services with 4580 (15.8%) and 4136 (12.3%) respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

:
The presence of developmental disorders are more frequent in males. The pediatric specialized consultation is de most demanded service while the age group with largest number of attentions was 5 to 14 years range, concentrated in ambulatory field.
