OBJECTIVES: to define the relationship between pharmacological non-adherence and virological success in patients with HIV. METHODS: case-control study in patients with HIV, observation time: between July 2017 and November 2018 (n: 39). It was defined as a case the patients that do not achieve fully virological success (n: 13), case-control relation: 1:2. Virological failure was defined as those which do not have less than 40 copies/mL of blood in 48 weeks after beginning antiretroviral treatment. The individual variables as demographics, social and clinical were used. Adherence measure was performed with Morisky-Green, SMAQ and ESPA survey. For univariate analysis, absolute and relative frequencies and summary measures were used. For binary analysis, contingency tables, chi-square tests, t-Student (Mann-Whitney U) and ANOVA (Kruskal-Wallis H). The statistical measure of force used was the odds ratio. RESULTS: the population age was characterized by an average age of 41±11 years, 90% male, 69% academic high level, 85% single; 41% homosexual and 36% a lower sociodemographic level. The average time in antiretroviral treatment was 24±16 months. The 71.4% of the non-adherent patients were in virologic failure in comparison with the 25% of the adherents. A non-adherent patient has 7.5 more probability of virologic failure than an adherent patient. Significative difference p-value: 0.018; OR 7.5 [IC95 1.2-46.5]. CONCLUSIONS: to have a low adherence with the intake of medication is related with a higher probability of virologic failure.
