ABSTRACT WITHDRAWN
Estimated 378.4 million Indians were having hypertension in 2013 and hypertension prevalence in India has now reached to the alarming situation. Atenolol, Metoprolol, Amlodipine, Losartan, Enalapril and lisinopril are widely prescribed antihypertensive medications in India. Hypertension treatment usually requires lifelong therapy. Thus analysis of cost of available drug products is imperative to assess economic burden on patients. The aim of this study was to analyze annual cost of hypertension treatment with different marketed brands and their comparison with drugs being sold under government of India’s scheme ‘Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Pariyojna’ (PMBJP). The means of maximum retail price of most widely prescribed tablet formulation brands of seven drugs was analyzed, annual cost of treatment was calculated and compared with drugs being sold under PMBJP scheme using one sample t test. An estimated cost saving projection in Indian hypertensive population (378.4 million) was also assessed by cost difference. Mean annual treatment cost ±SEM as monotherapy with different studied brands of atenolol (50 mg; 30 brands), metoprolol (50 mg; 29 brands), amlodipine (5 mg; 30 brands), losartan (50 mg; 30 brands), telmisartan (40 mg; 30 brands), enalapril (5mg; 30 brands) and lisinopril (5mg; 18 brands) was USD 11.20±1.29, 24.79±1.47,9.72±0.807, 23.22±0.957, 44.35±12.90, 9.70±0.732 and 17.82±0.625 respectively while it was USD 1.83, 3.78, 1.48, 13.46, 4.90, 1.78 and 3.62 respectively with PMBJP. The annual treatment cost with all drug products sold under PMBJP scheme is significantly less (P<0.001) as compared to other marketed commonly prescribed brands of each studied drug. If the studied antihypertensive drugs are prescribed and appropriately made available to patients under government scheme PMBJP, Indian economy can save annually about USD (million) 3542 (with atenolol) or 7949 (with metoprolol) or 3117 (with amlodipine) or 3692 (with losartan) or 14927 (with telmisartan) or 2996 (with enalapril) or 5373 (with lisinopril).
