ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF NEW ULTRASONIC ENERGY DEVICE:FROM HOSPITAL PERSPECTIVE

OBJECTIVES : Evaluate the financial benefits of the new ultrasonic energy device in surgical operation compared with the traditional ultrasonic knife to guide the device management in hospital.

METHODS : Collect data from Chinese real world study and related publications, analyze the differences in resource consumption between new and old technologies, and assess the impact of different technologies on operating costs.

RESULTS : A retrospective study based on 8 hospitals in Shandong Province showed that the average number of intraoperative hemostatic clips using the new ultrasonic energy device was 24 during laparoscopic gastrectomy, and there were no bleeding complications. According to related publications the number of hemostatic clips used in laparoscopic gastrectomy using traditional ultrasonic knife and new ultrasonic energy device were 28 and 12, respectively, no bleeding complications in either group. Based on the actual purchasing cost in China, the cost of using the traditional ultrasonic knife for single operation was 2333.33 RMB, the cost of single disinfection was 105 RMB, the cost of hemostatic clip was 2240 RMB, and the total cost was 4678.33 RMB. The cost of using the new ultrasonic energy device for single operation is 3000 RMB. And according to the number of hemostatic clips used during operation, the cost of hemostatic clip was 1920 RMB and 960 RMB respectively, the total cost was 4920 RMB and 3960 RMB respectively. Based on hospital perspective, single operation with new technology may increase 241.67 RMB or decrease 718.33 RMB according to the number of hemostatic clips.

CONCLUSIONS : From the results, although the cost of new ultrasonic energy device was higher, it can reduce the use of hemostatic clips and the cost of disinfection measures. The financial benefits of the new device differs based on clinical practice.
