OBJECTIVES: There is limited data available regarding healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) of genital warts (GW) in Dominican Republic (DR). The objective of this study was to describe the patterns of HCRU and estimate the mean costs associated with a GW episode of care (EOC) in female and male patients from the perspective of the public healthcare system. METHODS: A Delphi panel was conducted in 2016 to build consensus on patterns of HCRU for GW in DR. The panel consisted of 5 gynecologists, 5 urologists and 5 dermatologists from Public Sector of DR. A structured questionnaire based on a series of questions about the HCRU regarding GW episode of care (EOC) was used. The EOC was defined as the period from the first physician-visit to the last physician-visit associated with GW in the same calendar year. The questionnaire was developed based on previously published studies that used similar methodology. The direct medical costs were obtained from the official databases of the DR Public Sector (2016 prices) and converted from local currency (pesos dominicanos- RD) to US dollars (exchange rate December 2018). RESULTS: The mean direct medical care cost of GW EOC in women was RD$6,609.04 (US$131.86), mostly driven by treatment (69.4%) followed by consultations, diagnostic and laboratory tests (30.6%). In men, mean direct medical care cost of GW EOC was RD$6,178.54 (US$123.27), mostly driven by treatment (74.2%) followed by consultations, diagnostic and laboratory tests (25.7%). The mean cost per EOC in females was higher mainly due to colposcopy and Pap smear costs. CONCLUSIONS: This study offers an estimate of the mean costs of a GW EOC in women and men from the perspective of DR public healthcare system.
