Frequency of Myalgia in Patients Receiving Taxane Chemotherapy

OBJECTIVES The study aims to asses the frequency of myalgia in patients receiving Taxane chemotherapy METHODS A prospective observational study was conducted among 75 cancer patients in a tertiary care hospital, subjects received treatment for cancer for a period of six months. The data collected from the study included demographics, age, total number of cycles, occurrence of myalgia. Patients and care givers were interviewed for occurrence, duration and extent of pain. The severity of pain was graded using National Cancer Institute- Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events- (NCI-CTCAEv5.0). RESULTS Among the study patients, Docetaxel, Paclitaxel and Nab Paclitaxel was prescribed in 19, 44 and 12 patients respectively. Of these, the most prescribed combination was Paclitaxel and Carboplatin (38 patients). Of the 75 patients,22 was male and 53 female. Myalgia occurred in 48 patients. The frequency was 48/75 (64%). Male and female ratio of Myalgia was 12:36 pateints. The CTCAE grading showed mild, moderate and severe in 8, 24 and 16 cases respectively. The occurrence was more with Paclitaxel manifesting in 28 of the 48 cases. CONCLUSIONS In our study, the incidence of Myalgia was attributed with Taxane therapy. The incidence was higher with usage of Paclitaxel and a gender variation favoring females. The muscle pain caused a decrease in quality of life and an increase in the analgesic burden of the patient.
