OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to calculate the changes in healthcare inflation between the years 2017 and 2022 in Turkiye.
METHODS: The data used were obtained from the Ministry of Health (MoH), The Social Security Institution (SGK), the Turkish Medicines and Medical Devices Agency (TITCK), the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), the Turkish Medical Association (TTB), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the ECONALIX data sets. The data from 2017 to 2022 were used for inflation calculations. In the study, the Main Index Reference Year was determined as 2017 and the index value for 2017 was accepted as 100 and calculations were made on these values. Calculations were done by Microsoft excel program.
RESULTS: The findings of the study show that Turkiye's health inflation values show a continuous increase over the years and there has been an increase of 338.60% between the years 2017-2022. According to the analyses, the general health inflation value in 2022 was found to be 122.17%. When public and private health inflation are examined, the inflation value in 2022 is found to be 123.95% and 101.14%, respectively. When evaluated separately, inflation values from 2017 to 2022, MoH Special Service Fees increased by 184.75% and reached 64.88% in 2022, TTB coefficient increased by 61.57% to 38.11%, pharmaceutical prices increased by 72.21% to 41%, As 93, vitamin prices increased by 69.03% to 40.84%, and medical device prices increased by 82.85% to 45.31%.
CONCLUSIONS: Medical device costs, special service fees, TTB coefficients, and Turkiye pharmaceutical retail prices all showed increases over time. Additionally, the Turkiye health products retail price index demonstrated an overall upward trajectory. These findings suggest that the cost of healthcare services, medical materials, and pharmaceutical products in Turkiye has been subject to inflationary pressures, potentially impacting the affordability and accessibility of healthcare for the population.
