OBJECTIVES: This analysis explores potential savings with BN film over sublingual tablets over 2 years, from the perspective of the Swedish healthcare system.

METHODS: Cost minimization and budget impact analysis compared drug acquisition and administration costs based on supervision time of 30 seconds for administration of BN film and 4 minutes for tablets in the base case. Scenario analyses explored the effect of varying the tablet dissolution time and frequency of supervision in year 2.

RESULTS: In cost minimization analysis, BN film was associated with saving over tablets of 16,507 SEK per patient in year 1 and 5,518–58,528 SEK over 2 years depending on supervision frequency, despite higher acquisition costs. Savings were greater with slower tablet dissolution: 23,188–41,311 SEK with tablet dissolution of 4–8 minutes (three supervisions per week). Budget impact analysis exploring scenarios in which BN film replaces tablets demonstrated savings of 3.2–16.0 million SEK at 10–50% switch (three supervisions per week), and 12.6–63.0 million SEK with daily supervision.

CONCLUSIONS: Shorter supervision with BN film over sublingual tablets is cost saving from a payer perspective. Importantly, time savings will free up staff time and allow more patients to be treated per clinic. The predictable supervision time with BN film can help clinics to run more efficiently and improve patient satisfaction with treatment.
