Healthcare Resource Utilization of Severe Eosinophilic Asthma Patients Treated With Benralizumab in Real-Life: Results From the Portuguese BETREAT Study

OBJECTIVES: Severe asthma seriously contributes to the overall burden of asthma for patients across healthcare systems. In Portugal, direct costs related to asthma accounted for over 2% of the total healthcare expenditure in 2010. This analysis of the BETREAT study aims to evaluate the healthcare resource utilization (HRU) among severe eosinophilic asthma (SEA) patients in Portugal before and after starting treatment with benralizumab. This study is part of AstraZeneca’s global XALOC real-world evidence program.

METHODS: Observational, multicentric, retrospective study of adult SEA patients who started benralizumab treatment between July 2019 and October 2020. Data was collected from electronic medical records. Number of emergency room (ER) episodes, scheduled and unscheduled medical visits, and hospitalisations were assessed. A descriptive analysis was conducted for HRU at baseline (12-months prior to benralizumab first injection) and after 24-months follow-up.

RESULTS: 74 participants were included, 73.0% female, 74.3% aged < 65 years and 91.9% with at least one comorbidity reported. 32.4% of patients were previously biologic-treated. At baseline, patients had a mean (±SD) of 4.4±2.4 and 0.9±1.4 scheduled and unscheduled visits for asthma, respectively. During the follow-up period, most patients did not have ER episodes (77.0%) or hospitalisations (87.8%) and annual rate of ER episodes decreased from 1.5 at baseline to 0.2 episodes per year at 24-months. At baseline the mean (±SD) number of exacerbations that led to ER episodes and hospitalisations was 1.5±2.2 and 0.3±0.9, respectively, which decreased over the follow-up period to 0.8±1.2 and 0.2±0.6.

CONCLUSIONS: Benralizumab treatment led to a significant reduction in hospitalisations and ER episodes along with a decrease in the number of exacerbations. These results are consistent with pivotal clinical trials of the drug and suggest that better clinical control of asthma was associated with HRU reduction, which is a feasible target to decrease the burden of asthma across healthcare system.
