The Impact of Corrective Training on the Dynamic Axial Deviation of the Lower Limb Among Female Handball Players

Objectives: We aimed to reduce dynamic axis deviations by improving muscle strength and restoring their ratio, thus reducing the probability of non-contact injuries occurring.

Methods: The study was conducted between August and December 2019 in Hungary. The subjects were female athletes between the ages of 13-16 at the National Handball Academy. We assessed the lumbar motor control, the LESS test, the Step Down test, the muscle strength of the gluteus maximus and medius, and the strength and rate of the flexor and extensor muscles of the knee. We compared the values with paired t-test and Pearson's correlation (p≤0.05). The training program was 16 weeks, 2 per week for 50 minutes. The aim of this program was core muscle, quadriceps and hamstring muscles strengthening with proprioception development and stretching with SMR.

Results: In the case of dynamic valgus, managed to achieve a significant improvement in the case of the right (p<0.001) and left (p<0.001) feet. The first average value was 7.11±1.45 and 6.78±1.39 rate. After training decreased to 6.44±1.01 and 5.56±0.88 rate. There was a significant (p<0.001) decrease in the mean values of the LESS test scores, which predicts the risk of anterior cruciate ligament injuries. The first result of measurement was 7.83±1.17 and it decreased to 5.33±1.23point. Regarding the flexor-extensor ratio, which is considered to be the primary measurement, managed to achieve a significant improvement at 60/60 d/s in the case of the muscles around the knees on both the right (p=0.009) and left (p=0.022) sides. The first result was 57.68±5.63% and 66.78±8.31%. The new average value was 63.78±6.04% and 75.11±12.82%.

Conclusions: Based on the results, we think that by strengthening the core muscles and improving the flexor-extensor muscle strength ratio, the risk of dynamic valgus and thus anterior cruciate ligament injuries can be reduced.
