Knowledge, Perception, and Attitude of Pharmacists, Physicians, and Patients Toward Generic Drugs in Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia

OBJECTIVES Generic drugs are equal in efficacy and safety with original drugs yet more affordable. However, there are still many parties who doubt the quality of generic drugs. This study aimed to determine pharmacists, physicians, and patients' knowledge, perceptions, and attitude towards generic drugs in Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia. METHODS The research design used was cross-sectional. The survey was conducted by filling out a questionnaire, both online and offline or by interviewing on the spot. The total respondents in this study were 198 pharmacists (147 online respondents and 51 offline respondents), 102 general practitioners (30 online respondents and 72 offline respondents), and 110 patients (31 online respondents and 79 offline respondents) in the Yogyakarta Province spread over 5 Regencies. RESULTS On a 0 – 100 scale, the mean score of knowledge of pharmacists, physicians, and patients were 81.37±14.90, 78.67±12.00, and 68.31±22.18, respectively. Meanwhile, the mean score of perception of pharmacists, physicians, and patients were 73.22±7.66, 73.55±6.31, and 68.59±9.64, respectively. Lastly, the mean score of attitudes of pharmacists, physicians, and patients were 85.27±14.26, 86.69±14.59, and 59.10±15.84, respectively. There were significant relationships between some of characteristics of respondents versus either knowledge or perception or attitude of respondents toward generic drugs. There were also significant corelations between knowledge versus perception, knowledge versus attitude, as well as perception versus attitude towards generic drug among respondents. CONCLUSIONS This study informs that, in general, the knowledge, perceptions, and attitude of pharmacists, physicians, and patients towards generic drugs were pretty good. However, such efforts still need to be conducted to improve the knowledge, perceptions, and attitude toward generic drugs hence increasing the use of generic drugs.
