Objective: To measure the value created by the PPP between Guys Hospital and Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals/ProcEx Solutions Ltd (ProcEx) to improve the service delivery capacity of the cancer unit facing a growing demand for ECP treatments for CTCL and Graft versus host disease (GvHD) patients. The partnership started in 2012 with the implementation of the Kaizen concept by ProcEx that aimed to evaluate capacity constraints, design layout and patient scheduling.

Methodology: To measure the value created by the partnership, we calculated the increased capacity year on year and over the 8 year period based on the data collected by ProcEx. To determine if the increased capacity required additional human resources, we reviewed the nurse staffing resources allocated for ECP treatments over the same period. Finally, to measure the financial value created by the PPP for the ECP unit, we multiplied the additional number of treatments delivered by the tariff for each treatment.

Results: Over the period between 2012 and 2019, the total number of yearly ECP treatments delivered by the Guys photopheresis unit increased from 2,359 to 4,706. The number of nurses required to staff the unit did not increase and was maintained at a total of 4 nurses per shift to deliver ECP treatments. The unit is recording additional revenue of approximately £3.5M in 2019 compared to 2012.

Conclusions: The Guys hospital, Therakos and ProcEx Solutions partnership has created value in terms of increasing the capacity of the service to deliver treatments without incurring any additional nursing costs. We also conclude that as a result of the success of the PPP, more patients with CTCL and GvHD have benefited from accessing ECP treatment. The successful PPP continues in its mission to generate health benefits for the community.
