Measuring the Economic, Societal, and Organizational IMPACT of Personalized Healthcare in Oncology.

OBJECTIVES

:
Personalized healthcare (PHC), including: advanced diagnostic, personalized care plans, molecular tumor board (MTB), targeted therapies and real-time monitoring, aims to tailor patient care based on predicted response or risk of disease. The objective of this targeted literature review is to assess what the economic, societal, and organizational impacts of PHC are, how they are measured and what additional evidence needs to be generated.

METHODS

:
Electronic searches were conducted in Medline® with supplementary hand-searching of reviews. Eligibility criteria included patients with any cancer treated with an integrated PHC offering or individual PHC components.

RESULTS

:
150 publications were reviewed to assess the impact of PHC along the patient journey. Initial findings showed that MTBs significantly improve adherence to clinical guidelines, patient survival rates, improve overall workflow, but incur additional indirect costs due to healthcare professionals (HCP) time expenditure that digital solutions can mitigate by enabling virtual meetings. CDSS (Clinical decision support system) could reduce HCPs time constraints through data-analysis and lead to increased treatment efficiency. Digital patient monitoring & real world platforms would create incentives for creating high quality care and enable shared decision-making between HCPs & patients. Finally, personalized integrated solutions could positively impact the efficiency of care by avoiding unnecessary treatments, procedures & hospitalization.

CONCLUSIONS

:
PHC leads to more effective targeted therapies and decreases non-responders & non-compliant patients which generate fewer healthcare resource wastage (wasteful clinical, operational & governance-related waste). Organizationally, the time burden for HCPs can be reduced, and their focus can shift from data-analysis tasks to increased focus on treatment decisions and outcomes. Adopting, funding and generating insights on PHC generates benefits for health systems on an economic, societal and organizational level.
