Longitudinal Analysis of Biomarkers and Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease (Q-PARK DATABASE)

OBJECTIVES : Parkinson's disease is a long-term nervous system disorder that especially affects movement. To date, there are no treatments that reverse the disease progression. Instead, available treatment eases the symptoms. 15,000-20,000 individuals are expected to be suffering from Parkinson´s in Sweden. To enable better understanding of the Parkinson´s patient, we have constructed the Quantify Parkinson´s Research Programme (Q-PARK). Q-PARK contains real-world, nation-wide data from Parkinson’s patients and controls in Sweden with information on healthcare visits, medication use, demographics and socioeconomics. The purpose of Q-PARK is to facilitate studies investigating the predictors of costs, resource use, quality of life, and other key outcomes on patients with Parkinson’s disease and in controls and the differences between them. Q-PARK will also be used to investigate which biomarkers and patient characteristics are useful in predicting disease onset, treatment response, disease progression, and other outcomes. METHODS All patients (case) in Sweden with a Parkinson’s diagnosis (ICD-10: G20, ICD-9: 332, ICD-8: 342), identified in the Swedish National Patient Register are included. For each case person, 10 controls (non with Parkinson´s disease) will be randomly selected from the Swedish Total Population Register. RESULTS : The data extracted from the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare contains 111 671 unique individuals who were ever diagnosed with Parkinson´s. CONCLUSIONS : More patients than anticipated were diagnosed with Parkinson´s. Together with descriptive statistics (e.g. gender and treatment patterns), we aim at presenting more insight regarding the size of the study population at the conference.
