OBJECTIVES To estimate the loss of productivity (economic and social terms) generated by migraine in Veneto region Italy. Loss of productivity translates into absence from work (“absenteeism”) and indirectly to a “forced” presence at work, counterproductive for company and workers. METHODS : A survey was conducted to provide details about economic and entrepreneurial system of Veneto and to estimate economic impact of migraine. A representative sample of Veneto population was determined by age, gender, and province of residence. Information was collected about employment profile and economic sector. Conducted by Doxa Pharma in spring - summer 2019, the survey was carried out by phone using the CATI (Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing) method. 2,661 interviews were completed, allowing a sample of 1.9 % (95% confidence level), allowing for good level of significance. RESULTS 418,000 individuals were affected by migraine, 10.2 % of the adult population in total, (14.2% of women and 5.9 % of males). Most individuals were 35 to 44 years of age (16.6%), most active working population. There were 262,000 employees with migraine (63% of total number of patients). The added value lost in Veneto due to migraine amounts to 1.6 billion euros. In detail, presenteeism causes loss of regional added value of 927 million € (58 %) whereas absenteeism is responsible for residual 42%. Migraine has negative impact on people's quality of life, social relationships, and daily activities. The survey revealed a 24 % reduction in the ability to carry out normal daily activities, a value in line with employees' loss of productivity at work. This negative effect is greater for women (25%) and for individuals in the 35-44 age group (29%). CONCLUSIONS Migraine is a disease that generates big indirect costs for community (loss of labor productivity, limitations in daily activities) that are much higher than direct costs (medical care, assistance).
