COST OF HAEMATOPOIETIC STEM CELL TRANSPLANT IN TURKEY

OBJECTIVES : Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a unique approach for most of critical diseases. The aim of this study is to understand the cost of HSCT and realted conditions to public health insurance in Turkey.

METHODS : A computer based clinical literature review has been conducted. Depending on the findings of literature search, an expert survey has been prepared. The expert survey has been conducted with 5 experts who are experienced in HSCT in Turkey. Cost of HSCT have been calculated depending on survey results with Social Security Institution costs. RESULTS : Average cost of HSCT was calculated as 124,028.87 TL. The lowest cost belonged to “Matched sibling donor, Rescue transplant” with 77,640.68 TL followed by “Haploidentical donor, Rescue transplant” and “Matched unrelated donor & Mismatched unrelated donor, Rescue transplant” as 142,093.62 TL and 152,352.32 TL, respectively. Cost HSCT Follow-up for 12 months, Severe Infection and GvHD were calculated as 36,630.7 TL, 20,445.3 TL and 1,988.1 TL, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS : Clinical benefits exceed the cost of HSCT and related conditions depending on studies. Cost-effectivenss analysis for the diseases and outcomes are needed as well as further studies to understand and organize the management of HSCT in Turkey.
