OBJECTIVES

Estimate the costs, public expenditure and socio-economic inequities of anemia in the Public Health System of Peru.

METHODS

The study population was a cohort of 11,377 children under 36 months. The costs were estimated from the perspective of the financier taken for the year 2018. The definition of the clinical management schemes (medical procedures and medicines for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of the disease) come from the Insurable Conditions. Each clinical management scheme has been estimated using the standard costing methodology. Public expense was obtained from the Integrated System of Financial Administration-Ministry of Economy and for the variables of area of residence, natural region, mother's education, wellness quintile and beneficiary of the ENDES social program

RESULTS

The hypothetical cohort of the total of children under 36 months with anemia in Peru is 1,225,466 for the year 2018 (Prevalence of anemia: 43.5%). The total cost to combat anemia would be S /. 355,504,024.39 (unit cost S /. 290.00), corresponding to diagnosis 181.25 soles (62.4%), treatment 36.75 soles (12.7%) and for follow-up 72.36 soles (24.9%). The fixed cost corresponded to 95.84 soles (39.9%) and the variable cost to 144.34 soles (60.1%). Anemia was higher in the rural area (50.9%), Andean population (50.2%) and Amazon (50.5%), illiteracy by the mother (51.9%), the poor (47.9%) and extremely poor (53.6%). %) is the most affected and beneficiaries of social programs (51.4%)

CONCLUSIONS

Increasing the budget to fight anemia in Peru is a very important aspect, however this must be complemented with improvements in access to health services for the most vulnerable population, this will allow improving financing policies and investing in equity in the framework of universal health coverage in the country
