Cost of Illness of Inpatient Pediatric Pneumonia Patients Hospitalized in Yogyakarta Indonesia

OBJECTIVES

:
This research was done to determine the average cost of illness of inpatient pneumonia patients hospitalized in the hospitals in Yogyakarta Indonesia.

METHODS

:
It was a pharmacoeconomic study using the cost of illness method. The calculation of the cost in the care of inpatient pediatric pneumonia patients according to a societal perspective was conducted observatively with a cross sectional design. Cost of illness analysis included calculating the costs of direct medical, direct non-medical, and indirect cost. Data were collected from 11 public and private hospitals in Yogyakarta. Collecting data by taking medical records, detailed data on patient care costs, and interviews using questionnaires with caregivers. The study populations were all inpatient pediatric pneumonia patients hospitalized at 11 public and private hospitals in Yogyakarta in September 2017 to March 2018. The study samples were all populations that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Analysis of cost of illness calculations applied descriptive analysis methods.

RESULTS

:
In this study, 390 inpatient pediatric pneumonia patients were obtained. The average cost of illness for the treatment of inpatient pediatric meningitis patients was IDR 7,159,771±14,433,570, consisting of the average direct medical cost of IDR 6,388,907±13,250,669 (89.23%), the average direct non-medical cost of IDR 591,285±1,295,786 (8.26%), and the average indirect cost of IDR 180,041±518,207 (2.51%). Components of direct medical cost with the largest percentage were drugs and medical supplies (21.66%); while the largest direct non-medical cost were the expenditure of additional needs for the patient's family (84.66%). The indirect cost component came from the reduction of the patient's parents' income while the patient is hospitalized.

CONCLUSIONS

:
The average cost of illness for the treatment of inpatient pediatric meningitis patients was IDR 7,159,771±14,433,570. Components of direct medical cost with the largest percentage were drugs and medical supplies.
