OBJECTIVES : 1. 1. To compare means of insomnia and depression of the 3 groups of people at Burapha University. 2. To identify association between insomnia and depression. 3. To investigate drug used for insomnia and depression.

METHODS : A cross-sectional survey study was conducted at Burapha University in Chonburi, Thailand in 2019. The people at Burapha University were categorized into three groups: lecturer, student and employee. 243 sample size was calculated via Jacob Cohen’s table page 384, α was set at 0.05, β=0.20, power=0.80, effect size=.20, yielded n = 81 (each group). Samples were randomly selected using purposive sampling method. Instruments: Sleeping quality was measured by the validated Modified Pittsburgh sleep quality index (MPSQI)-Thai version. A self-rated questionnaire was used to assess sleep the sleep quality and disturbances over a 2-week interval. This questionnaire consists of 7 constructs (19 observed variables) namely: 1) Subjective sleep quality; 2) Sleep latency; 3) Sleep duration; 4) Habitual sleep efficiency; 5) Sleep disturbances; 6) Use of hypnotic agent; and 7) Daytime dysfunction. Depression was a dependent variable. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) was used to screen for the presence of symptoms of depression and anxiety.

RESULTS

Sleep quality of three groups at Burapha University ranging from good quality to poor quality were employee, student, lecturer, respectively. The most and least depressing groups were lecturers and employees (p=0.024, 0.047, respectively, ANOVA), while lecturers and students consumed more caffeine than employees and employees consumed more caffeine than students. Lorazepam0.5 mg, Amitriptyline 25 mg and Clonazepam 2 mg were the most three sleeping pills prescribed for people at Burapha University. Moreover, we found that depression was significantly associated with insomnia (p=0.014, Chi Square).

CONCLUSIONS

This study confirmed the association between depression and insomnia.
