OBJECTIVES: Actually, multimorbidity affects approximately 17% of Colombian adults. The Colombian healthcare system, guided by the Comprehensive Health Care Policy (PAIS) and its Integral Care Routes (RIAS), strives to provide comprehensive care. However, there are significant gaps in the implementation of specific models for managing patients with multimorbidity. This study aims to identify the challenges and opportunities in the care of patients with multimorbidity in Colombia, focusing on the gaps and opportunities of he actual healthcare system
METHODS: A qualitative research was conducted using focus groups with healthcare personnel across eight Colombian territories in 2023. The discussions centered on their experiences, obstacles, and suggestions for improving multimorbidity care within the framework of the national health system. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key themes and patterns related to policy and regulatory challenges.
RESULTS: The study revealed several challenges: lack of incentive mechanisms within insurance policies, excessive administrative burdens, interinstitutional disarticulation, and insufficient technical resources. Healthcare professionals highlighted opportunities for improvement, including policy reforms to enhance patient education, better integration of diagnostic units, and the promotion of interdisciplinary care approaches
CONCLUSIONS: Addressing the identified policy and regulatory obstacles can significantly improve the quality and continuity of care for patients with multimorbidity. Policy reforms that enhance patient education, integrate diagnostic services, and foster interdisciplinary care are essential. These improvements can lead to better health outcomes and increased efficiency within the healthcare system, ultimately benefiting multimorbid patients in Colombia.
