OBJECTIVES. Adverse effects of medical treatment (AEMT) are associated with low quality of health care, lack of professional interaction between physicians, nurses, pharmacist, patient’s non-compliance/ non-adherence and as a result with an economic burden. This study assessed the association between ratio of disability adjusted life years (DALY) from AEMT in Ukraine and such countries as USA, Canada, Great Britain, Sweden, EU countries, Japan which have a good experience and steady guidelines in rational pharmacotherapy field and Ukrainian nearest neighbors with same past basic level in health care system development - Russia and Belarus.

METHODS.

The data of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington were used. It is a known fact that cardiovascular diseases (CVD) when people need all-life poly-medication treatment may increase the possibility of AEMT. Therefore, the Spearman correlation between DALY data from AEMT and CVD collected for researched countries was calculated.

RESULTS. It was defined that in Ukraine DALY from AEMT is 70.76 per 100 thousand, which is 3 times the value of this indicator for Japan, 2.5 times for Canada, Australia and Sweden, 2 times for the UK, 1.5 times for the USA, and about 2 for such EU countries as Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia. It should be noted that for Eastern European countries such as Belarus and Russia DALY from AEMT is as high as in Ukraine and ranges from 51.29 (Russia) to 86.48 (Belarus). It was estimated that between the DALYs from AEMT and DALYs from CVD in the countries included to research have a unique statistically significant correlation (r = 0.735 p <0.05).

CONCLUSIONS. Thus, decreasing of the DALY level from the influence of AEMT is an important and reasoned task for the Ukrainian health system, which needs a set of actions and multiprofessional interaction to address it.
