PURPOSE

: Demographic trends together with new health technologies generate a move towards the increase of healthcare spending worldwide. Latin American (Latam) healthcare systems present an important pressure to decrease expenditures, mainly due to limited budgets and potential inefficiencies. Therefore, once there is a limited budget for healthcare management, a rational budget allocation for the incorporation of novel technologies and use of established ones is crucial. In this scenario, real world evidence (RWE) plays an important role, especially for effectiveness evaluation, safety and economic analysis. Nevertheless, RWE studies in Latam are still scarce, with important barriers in usage, interpretation, methodology and data availability. In this context, RWE usage in Latam will be addressed in the workshop using different perspectives (policy, manufacturer/consultant and technical).

DESCRIPTION

: In this workshop, we will hold a holistic discussion regarding the usage of RWE in Latam in regards to new and established health technologies (burden of disease and priority setting, health technology assessment [HTA], effectiveness and safety measurement, innovative access models), from the health policy, industry/data consultancy and research/technical perspectives. The focus will be on health technologies broadly but with special emphasis on medicines. The use of RWE in HTA and/or in post launch phases from the perspective of health systems, with applied examples around the world (from Latam or applicable to Latam) will be presented. ISPOR role and perspectives in regards to RWE will be highlighted. RWE challenges and opportunities for technology producers, data holders and consultants will be provided by a regional life science consultant. A technical overview about current technical challenges for RWE worldwide and in Latam and suggestions for technical enablers will be provided by an experienced pharmacoecopidemiologist working in the region. At the end of the workshop, participants will be encouraged to share relevant experiences and suggestions in regards to the topics presented.
