GLUCOSAMINE VS PLACEBO IN THE TREATMENT OF OSTEOARTHRITIS- META-ANALYSIS

OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy of glucosamine by conducting a meta-analysis of double blinded, randomised, controlled trials (RCTs) comparing glucosamine with placebo. METHODS: Published RCTs were identified from the Cochrane review and a literature search of Medline, Embase and the Cochrane Clinical Trials Register. The outcomes examined were change in mean and minimum joint space narrowing (JSN), WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index) (pain, function and stiffness and total) and the Lequesne Index. The WOMAC scales were adjusted to a common scale. Key exclusion criteria were: non-oral administration, no outcomes of interest, <20 patients and non-English publication.
