Insomnia surpasses other illness by prevalence (40-50% population), influence on life, economic and time losses. Pharmacotherapy is mostly widespread method of insomnia therapy and prophylaxis. 28 hypnotic drugs are approved for application through the Russia. These drugs are equally effective and distinguished by frequency and heaviness of adverse events, quality of life, and costs. The number of corresponding trials were insufficient to make the quantitative comparison of these parameters. We have arranged the hypnotic drugs by ascending their side effects and descending their quality of life in following sequence: imovan (cyclopyrrolon) and ivadal (imidazopyridine), benzodiazepine (22), donormyl (ethanolamine), barbiturates (3). Benzodiazepines are commonly used drugs which explained for their low costs, high effectiveness and prescribing habits. The next generation drugs imovan and ivadal does not have the same sales and required active promotion which have complicated after financial crash at the middle of 1998. As we proposed the benzodiazepines from CIS and East Europe will be the most used hypnotic drugs during the next two years in Russia.
