OBJECTIVES: To assess the diagnosis methods and estimate the diagnosis cost of lung cancer in Greece.

METHODS: The primary data source was a hospital-based registry of all new lung cancer cases who took care in the Oncology Unit of “Sotiria” Hospital, in Athens, in Greece from the year 2015 and onward. Diagnostic-related characteristics were extracted from registry for patients diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC). More specific, method (i.e. histological or cytological) and healthcare resources used for diagnosis, including tests for mutation status, imaging tests, laboratory tests and medical procedures used to receive sample, were recorded. The diagnosis cost from payer perspective was calculated by combining the resource utilization with the corresponding unit costs (€, 2017).

RESULTS:

CONCLUSIONS: The present study provides useful insights regarding methods used for lung cancer diagnosis in Greece as well as an estimation about the diagnosis cost indicating that our disease fund is charged about €700 per patient.
