PREVALENCE OF COMMON IMMUNOLOGICAL DISORDERS IN EGYPT

OBJECTIVES: There are few studies that discussed the prevalence of Immunological disorders in Egypt but all of them are based on projecting the neighbouring countries prevalence. The aim of this study is to calculate the prevalence diagnosed as well as treated population with biologics of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), Psoriasis (PSO), Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA), Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD) for Egypt in 2017. METHODS: : Patients files were obtained from 20 top Rheumatology sites and 10 top Gastroenterology sites for each condition, then the patients diagnosed as well as treated were projected to the total sites in Egypt as per their workload and average no. of patients treated, data of biologics utilized were validated using retail audit reports. RESULTS: : The number of patients diagnosed and treated with RA, AS, PSO, PsA, UC and CD collectively in Egypt are 292,991, 54% (157,684) of them are eligible for Biologics and only 4% (11,857) patient are receiving biologics. Prevalence diagnosed for 2017 was (204,635) for RA, (30,969) for AS (2,945) for PSO, (22,501) for PsA, (17,581) for UC and (14,360) for CD. CONCLUSIONS: : There is a significant gap between the number of patients eligible for biologics and those who are actually receiving biological treatments. The main reason is attributed to high cost of biologic as well as low public insurance coverage.
