PARENTS’ BELIEFS AND KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE MANAGEMENT OF OTITIS MEDIA IN UNAIZAH, SAUDIARABIA- A QUALITATIVE STUDY

^BACKGROUND:

^{Otitis media (OM) is one of the most common illness among children in the world. The majority of children will experience at least one episode of OM during childhood. Early detection and proper management can prevent children having complications due to OM, however there is a lack of data available on parent’s knowledge regarding OM among Saudi population.}

^OBJECTIVES:

^{This is study aims to explore parents’ beliefs and knowledge about the management of OM.}

^METHODS:

^{Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 parents of children who had diagnosed with OM. Parents were recruited at home or at work in Unaizah ,Saudi Arabia. A pre-validated interview guide was used for data collection. Saturation was reached after 12th interview, however two more interviews were conducted to confirm saturation. The interviews were subjected to thematic content analysis.}

^{RESULTS: :}

^{Thematic content analysis revealed three major themes: parent’s knowledge about OM, parent’s beliefs about the management of OM, treatment seeking behavior of parents towards OM . Most parents did not have an accurate understanding of what causes OM. The most common source of information to treat OM was getting advice and information from the doctors and their family members. Most parents agreed that antibiotics are the best option to treat OM and the ear drops or painkiller are not enough to treat OM.}

^CONCLUSIONS:

^{The current reveals that majority of parents beliefs the best and cure medicine is antibiotic and some parents think ear drops and painkiller can treat OM. Doctors were considered as the main source of information.}
