INTRODUCTION RATE OF NEW HEMATO-ONCOLOGY DRUGS IN CATALONIA

OBJECTIVES: To analyse the introduction rate of new hemato-oncology drugs during 2016 and 2017 in Catalonia METHODS: New hemato-oncology drugs prescribed for the first time in the Catalan Health Service (CatSalut) during 2016 were identified (excluding new indications). The number of patients treated (Catalan population reference: 7.5M) and the corresponding budgetary burden during 2016 -2017 were calculates overall and within class. The source used to perform the analysis was the Hospital Pharmaceutical Reimbursement database of CatSalut. Limitation: different time of marketing authorization during 2016 and the expansion to indications during 2017. RESULTS: Between 2016 and 2017, new hemato-oncology drugs had an increase of 58.0% in patients and 62.0% in cost, although the total hemato-oncology drugs raised 8.0% and 14.0% respectively. CONCLUSIONS: A high number of patients had early access new hemato-oncology drugs, with a rapidly growing economic impact despite being a low number of drugs. Additionally, the cost per patient was more than twice higher as compared to the cost of hemato-oncology drug class. New hemato-oncology drugs had a fast introduction in the second year; whether this is related to clinical value in life-threatening conditions with unmet medical needs worth further research.
