OBJECTIVES: The present research study was undertaken with the goal of examining the additional economic burden faced from the co-morbidities of cardiovascular diseases, in the wake of increasing financial burden posed by these co-morbid conditions from reimbursement institution perspective including direct costs.

METHODS: The research followed a quantitative design, wherein 5 experts from the field were administered the questionnaire, to gain insight into the costs borne by the patients suffering from the co-morbidities of CVD. The study entailed onto investigations for minor bleeding events, major bleeding events, intracranial bleeding, stroke, and myocardial infarction. The questionnaire forms followed the ACCF/AHA/ESC guidelines. The total costs included the costs for diagnosis, maintenance, non-medicine, and medicine costs.

RESULTS: The findings showed thigh total annual costs for CVDs exhibiting myocardial infarction co-morbidities for both acute and maintenance treatment as 5,622.95 TL and 1,245.04 TL respectively. The total costs for major bleeding events were found to be 1,211.95 TL, whereas for minor bleeding events the costs were 496.26 TL. The total cost for intracranial bleeding was 1,761.53 TL, and 3,595.62 TL for stroke, which followed myocardial infarction.

CONCLUSIONS: The study findings helped gain an insight into the most prominent co-morbidities associated with CVDs in the perspective of reimbursement institution including direct costs. Further studies are needed to understand the real cost for reimbursement institution.
