COST-EFFECTIVENESS ANALYSIS OF SWITCHING TO ELUXADOLINE IN IBS-D PATIENTS WHO REPORT PRIOR LOPERAMIDE USE

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the health benefits and costs of switching to Eluxadoline in Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) Patients; as a possible treatment strategy to overcome the limited success of over-the-counter therapies such as loperamide. From patient perceive. METHODS: A decision analytic tree model with two health (adequate symptom control, inadequate symptom control) was constructed. The clinical parameters and utility values were derived using available published data. Direct medical costs from the health care system/funder perspective that had an impact on health budget were sourced from national data. All costs and effects were discounted at 3.5% annually. One- way sensitivity analysis was conducted. RESULTS: The estimate of total quality adjusted life years (QALYs) while using Eluxadoline were 10.87 compared to 9.20 for the use of loperamide in Egyptian patients. The total costs of consequences for using Eluxadoline and loperamide were EGP 2,870 and EGP 8,794, respectively per person per year. Switching to Eluxadoline resulted in better outcomes (difference; 1.66 QALYs) and total savings (EGP -5,924) per person. Cost of complications and response rate were the most influent factors on the results as has been showed by sensitivity analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Switching to Eluxadoline in the Egypt might help in overcome the limited success of over-the-counter therapies such as loperamide in the treatment of Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea.
