ASSOCIATION BETWEEN DEPRESSION AND RISK OF DIABETES MELLITUS- A PROSPECTIVE COHORT STUDY AMONG CHINESE MIDDLE-AGED AND ELDERLY POPULATION

OBJECTIVES: To prospectively examine the association between depression and risk of diabetes mellitus among Chinese middle-aged and elderly population. METHODS: We analyzed data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. 9978 participants (45-75 years old;46.7% men) free of diabetes mellitus were followed from 2011 to 2015. Depression was evaluated using the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10) at baseline. The incidence diabetes mellitus case was assessed by a report physician-diagnosed diabetes in the first (2013) and second (2015) follow-ups. Logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations after adjusting for potential confounding factors. RESULTS:
