ANALYSIS OF DYSLIPIDEMIA AMONG PATIENTS WITH DIABETES MELLITUS

OBJECTIVES: Dyslipidemia is one of the main hazard factors for cardiovascular disease (CV) in diabetes. Early detection and treatment of dyslipidemia in diabetic patients can prevent risk for the atherogenic CV. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and pattern of dyslipidemia among diabetic type 2 outpatients.

METHODS: A cross-sectional study was established in the endocrinology department of Hospital Pulau Pinang, Malaysia, October 2016-2017. About RESULTS: Only 9 (1.8%) cases had normal lipid values with age (49.9±14.8) and females 5 (55.6%). While 491 (98.2%) subjects had dyslipidemia, age (55.6±14.8) years and females 251 (51.1%) and classified as follow; 140 (28.5%) cases had controlled dyslipidemia with age (61.2±14.8) years and females 73 (52.1%). About 117 (23.8%) subjects had hypercholesterolemia with age (48.7±14.8) years and males 59 (50.4%). However, 65 (13.2%) patients had hypertriglyceridemia with age (56.4±14.8) years and females 38 (58.5%). Subjects with low HDL cholesterol were 73 (14.9%) with age (58.7±14.8) and males 47 (64.4%). Patients with mixed-hyperlipidemia were 96 (19.6%) subjects with age (53.1±14.8) and females 56 (58.3%).

CONCLUSIONS: Most of the cases had dyslipidemia, and nearly three-quarters of them had uncontrolled dyslipidemia. Hypercholesterolemia is prominent among younger patients and the other form of dyslipidemia prevalent among older patients. Low HDL cholesterol and hypercholesterolemia are prevalent among males while hypertriglyceridemia and mixed-hyperlipidemia are widespread among females.
