THE EVALUATION OF “THE ANTIBIOTIC SMART USE (ASU)” PROGRAM IN PHARYNGITIS IN COMMUNITY PHARMACY, BANGKOK

BACKGROUND: Pharyngitis is caused by either viruses and Streptococcus pyogenes

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the Antibiotic Smart Use (ASU) program in pharyngitis in community pharmacy.

METHODS: An action research was conducted in one community pharmacy during February, 2017 to January, 2018 in Bangkok. Patients with pharyngitis would be participated in ASU program which consisted of health education and McIsaac Scores that is the screening the risk of group A Streptococcal pharyngitis. Patients with scores of 3 or more (having the risks of group A Streptococcal pharyngitis) would be dispensed with antimicrobial medication. But patients with scores less than 3 (having the risk of viral pharyngitis) would be dispensed with non-antimicrobial medicine (e.g. NSAIDs, herbs). We monitored the symptoms by phone after 3 days.

RESULTS: There were Moreover, 41.18 and 58.82 percent of patients were satisfied and very satisfied in this program, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS: ASU program is another useful tool to reduce the dispensing of the irrational antimicrobial dispensing.
