POTENTIAL IMPACTS OF RATIONAL DRUG USE POLICY ON ANALGESIC USE IN PATIENTS WITH OSTEOARTHRITIS- AN EXPLORATORY STUDY

OBJECTIVES: Since 2013, the Subcommittee on the Promotion of Rational Drug Use (RDU) under the National Drug Policy in Thailand has implemented a Rational Drug Use Hospital Project to improve the management system for quality and cost-effectiveness use of medicine. This study aims to explore trends of analgesic cost after the policy implementation that may reflect the potential impacts of the policy. METHODS: An interrupted time series analysis was performed with a tracer of analgesic used in osteoarthritis patients, including nonsteroidal anti-inflamatory drugs (NSAIDs) and tramadol. These drugs were recommended to avoid according to the RDU criteria. The electronic health records of the osteoarthritis patients with analgesics at a 120-bed community hospital in the eastern part of Thailand during 2014-2015 were analyzed. This hospital adopted the RDU policy in 2015. RESULTS:
